I was called to the B.C. bar in 1974 and then practiced for four years with the
B.C. Crown Counsel Office in Victoria before leaving to form the firm of Buckler
Metzger Brown and Milliken in 1978.
I left that firm in 1984 with Judith Kay to establish Brown and Kay, and then
merged one year later with Deborah Acheson and Jane Henderson to form Brown
Acheson Henderson and Kay - the “Broads on Broad Street”.
In all of these practices, I concentrated on
Family Law. In 1988, Jane Henderson and myself migrated to Horne
Coupar, where I remained until 2001 when we formed the firm of
Brown Henderson.
My practice is still primarily family law. I have been one of the first lawyers
in Victoria to embrace collaborative law and am firmly wedded to the concept of
resolving family cases without trial. I am a Family Law Mediator, a Commercial
Arbitrator, a Parent Coordinator, and a member of the Executive of B.C.
Hear
the Child Society which means that I will interview children whose parents
are unable to agree on parenting plans.
I have been very involved in my profession - in the
Canadian Bar
Association, as a Director of the
B.C. Continuing Legal Education Society,
as a Bencher of the Law Society, and as the
President of the Law Society in 1998. I also served as B.C.
Director on the Board of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
In the community, I have been involved in the Victoria
Women’s Transition House Society, the Sexual Assault Centre, the Canadian
Red Cross Society, Mount St. Mary Hospital, the United Way,
Pacific Sport, the University
of Victoria, and the B.C. Law Institute.
I am the Co-Chair of the National Family Law program operated under the auspices
of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
This program is for lawyers and judges across Canada and happens for a week every two years.
I am also a fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the
President of the
Canadian Chapter commencing in August 2008.
I have received the Women of Distinction Award in 1997 and was the recent
recipient of the Community Leadership Award from
Leadership
Victoria for 2009.
